The Body Shop

The Body Shop International Limited, trading as The Body Shop, is a British cosmetics, skincare and perfume company.Founded by Anita Roddick in 1976, the company now has 1,000 product lines sold in approximately 3,000 stores divided between company-owned and franchise outlets in more than 65 countries.

Originally trading from Brighton, the company is now based in London Bridge and Littlehampton, West Sussex and is owned by the Brazilian cosmetics company Natura as a subsidiary of the Natura & Co group. The company was owned by French cosmetics company L’Oréal from 2006 to 2017. In September 2017, L’Oréal sold it to Brazilian Natura & Co.

Anita has pioneered a business model that has a positive impact for individuals and communities, and uses the human connection as a tool to inspire learning and success. She opposed the industry’s false claims that promote excellence as a source of happiness. She described beauty as a source of joy and energy, as well as a powerful tool for building self-esteem. Anita opened her first store in Brighton in 1976. The Body Shop fits perfectly into Brighton’s socially and environmentally progressive spirit.

The Body Shop has a long-standing commitment to supporting social and environmental movements and using its presence across the world to raise awareness and advocate for long term change on many issues including human trafficking, domestic violence, climate change, deforestation, whaling, and animal testing in the cosmetic industry. The company pioneered the fair trade movement in the beauty industry and continues to work in partnership with suppliers across the world sourcing high quality natural ingredients, accessories and packaging through its Community Trade programme.
