Vueling

Vueling was founded on 10 February 2004 and began operations on 1 July 2004, with flights between Barcelona and Ibiza. The first fleet consisted of two Airbus A320 aircraft based in Barcelona, serving Brussels, Ibiza, Palma de Mallorca and Paris-CDG. The name Vueling is a combination of the Spanish word vuelo (flight) with the English gerund suffix -ing.

Initially, Vueling’s major shareholders were Apax Partners (40%), Inversiones Hemisferio (Grupo Planeta) (30%), Vueling’s management team (23%) and V.A. Investor (JetBlue Airways) (7%).[citation needed] In the early stages, the general manager of the company was Lázaro Ros, while Carlos Muñoz was the CEO. In November 2007, Vueling appointed Spanair Lars Nygaard as CEO, replacing Carlos Muñoz, who remained a member of the board of directors.Madrid was added as the airline’s second base in 2005, followed by Paris CDG, its first base outside Spain, in 2007. Sevilla followed in December 2009.

In June 2008 Vueling and rival Spanish low-cost airline Clickair announced their intention to merge. The merger is designed to create a carrier that can better compete in the competitive Spanish airline market and reduce high fuel costs, for which Iberia is the main industrial partner. Clickair’s Alex Cruz has been appointed managing director, although the new company will trade under the name Vueling. The deal was subject to review and approval by European competition regulators, who were concerned that the combined airline would have a significant competitive advantage on about 19 routes.

Vueling is one of Europe’s leading low-cost airlines, with particular importance in France and Italy, as well as in the Spanish domestic market. Maintaining constant operational flexibility and readiness, the company managed to quickly increase to pre-pandemic capacity levels as demand recovered. And thus strengthening its leadership position in the main domestic and international markets.

It works hard every day to continue to offer all its customers the best connection in Europe, giving them more options to travel and discover new places. However, it also knows that it can only achieve its goal of becoming Europe’s leading low-cost airline in terms of customer experience by trying to provide real and urgent solutions that will help reduce global warming.

Regulators required the release of slots at Barcelona and other European airports as a condition of the merger. On 15 July 2009, the merger of Vueling and Clickair was completed. The newly merged airline operates under the Vueling brand; Clickair flights and aircraft are being rebranded under the Vueling name. It became the second largest Spanish airline, flying 8.2 million passengers to almost 50 destinations in 2009.

Airlines face a big challenge because they are dependent on fossil fuels, and low-carbon options are a much more complex solution for this sector. But for more than a decade, our company has been at the forefront of the aviation industry’s fight against climate change and believes that achieving net zero emissions is possible.
