Debenhams, a Brand That Draws its Quality From its History
The business was founded in 1778 by William Clark, who started trading as a drapery shop at 44 Wigmore Street in London. In 1813, William Debenham became a partner and the company name was changed to Clark & Debenham. The store was later renamed Cavendish House and sold fabrics, silks, haberdashery, hats, hosiery, lace and family bereavement items. As the business grew, the partners decided to expand the business by opening branches in Cheltenham and Harrogate. Once an iconic British department store chain, Debenhams has a long history dating back to its founding in the late 18th century. Originally founded as a curtain shop in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, the brand has grown rapidly and has become known for its wide range of quality products, from fashion and beauty to homewares.
The Debenhams brand and website were acquired by online retailer Boohoo for £55 million in January 2021. However, Boohoo did not retain any stores, meaning up to 12,000 jobs were lost. Boohoo relaunched its website as Debenhams.com under its own company Debenhams.com Online Limited on 12 April 2021, when Debenhams stores reopened to begin closing sales following the easing of some COVID-19 restrictions. After 243 years in business, the remaining Debenhams stores closed for the final time in May 2021. Over the years, Debenhams has undergone numerous transformations to adapt to changing consumer preferences and market conditions, and has become a staple on the UK high street with its unique blend of high street fashion, private labels and in-house labels.
An extended and refurbished premises opened in Cheltenham in October 1844. Pooley and Smith retired from the business in 1851, when Debenham took his son William and Clement Freebody into partnership, trading as Debenham, Son & Freebody. At this time, three shops in London, Cheltenham and Harrogate were also trading in similar goods, and published a joint catalogue called the Fashion Book, which was the basis of an extensive mail-order trade. When Freebody retired in 1876, a new partnership was formed, Debenham & Hewitt. George Hewitt appears to have worked as a draper’s assistant in the Cheltenham shop in the early 1860s, but details of his later career are unknown. By 1883, George Hewitt was the sole owner of the Cheltenham business.
In 1823, Clark & Debenham opened a small curtain business at 3 Promenade Rooms in Cheltenham, selling a variety of silks, muslins, shawls, gloves, lace and fancy goods. In 1837, Clark retired from the business and Debenham took on two of his most trusted employees, William Pooley and John Smith, as partners, and began trading as Debenham, Pooley & Smith in London and Cheltenham. In 1840, the management of the Cheltenham branch appears to have been given to Debenham’s brother-in-law, Clement Freebody. Another branch store opened in Harrogate around 1843. Even as the brand navigates its new identity in the digital marketplace, it carries the weight of a rich history that reflects the transformation of retail in the UK.
However, the rise of online shopping and intense competition from both established retailers and new entrants has taken its toll on Debenhams in the 21st century. Despite efforts to modernise and diversify its offering, the company has faced significant financial difficulties and has eventually entered administration on several occasions. Debenhams announced that it will close all of its bricks-and-mortar stores in 2020, marking the end of an era for a brand synonymous with British retail culture. While bricks-and-mortar stores have disappeared from the high street, Debenhams has made a move towards e-commerce and has maintained an online presence that continues to offer a range that appeals to a new generation of shoppers looking for convenience and variety.
Debenhams’ legacy lives on not only through its enduring brand recognition, but also in the memories of generations of shoppers who fondly remember browsing its aisles, finding everything from everyday essentials to the latest fashion trends. As the retail landscape evolves, Debenhams’ move to a digital-first approach is a reminder of the changing dynamics of consumer behaviour and the importance of adaptability to survive in an increasingly competitive environment.
