Domino’s Pizza, Inc. is a pizza company, which operates a network of company-owned and franchise-owned stores in the U.S. and international markets. It operates though the following three segments: U.S. Stores, International Franchise and Supply Chain. The U.S. Stores segment consists primarily of franchise operations. The International Franchise segment comprises of a network of franchised stores. The Supply Chain segment operates regional dough manufacturing and food supply chain centers. The company was founded by James Monaghan and Thomas Stephen Monaghan in 1960 and is headquartered in Ann Arbor, MI.
In 1960,Tom Monaghan and his brother, James, took over the operation of DomiNick’s, an existing location of a small pizza restaurant chain that had been owned by Dominick DeVarti, at 507 Cross Street (now 301 West Cross Street)in Ypsilanti, Michigan, near Eastern Michigan University. The deal was secured by a $500 down payment, then the brothers borrowed $900 to pay for the store. The brothers planned to split the work hours evenly, but James did not want to quit his job as a full-time postman to keep up with the demands of the new business. Within eight months, James traded his half of the business to Tom for the Volkswagen Beetle they used for pizza deliveries.
By 1965, Tom Monaghan had purchased two additional pizzerias; he now had a total of three locations in the same county. Monaghan wanted the stores to share the same branding, but the original owner forbade him from using the DomiNick’s name. One day, an employee, Jim Kennedy, returned from a pizza delivery and suggested the name “Domino’s”.Monaghan immediately loved the idea and officially renamed the business Domino’s Pizza, Inc. in 1965.
The corporation is Delaware-domiciled and headquartered at the Domino’s Farms Office Park in Ann Arbor Township, near Ann Arbor, Michigan. As of 2018, Domino’s had approximately 15,000 stores, with 5,649 in the United States, 1,500 in India, and 1,249 in the United Kingdom.Domino’s has stores in over 83 countries and 5,701 cities worldwide.
In 1997 Domino’s sold over 325 million pizzas, with pepperoni being the most popular topping. The chain used over 27 million pounds of pepperoni that year, as well as over 174 million pounds of part-skim mozzarella cheese and over 3 million pounds of pizza sauce, among other ingredients.
The Domino’s menu varies by region. The current Domino’s menu in the United States features a variety of Italian-American main and side dishes. Pizza is the primary focus, with traditional, specialty, and custom pizzas available in a variety of crust styles and toppings. In 2011, Domino’s launched artisan-style pizzas. Additional entrees include pasta, bread bowls, and oven-baked sandwiches. The menu offers chicken and bread side dishes, as well as beverages and desserts.
From its founding until the early 1990s, the menu at Domino’s Pizza was kept simple relative to other fast food restaurants, to ensure efficiency of delivery.Historically, Domino’s menu consisted solely of one style of pizza crust in two sizes (12-inch and 16-inch), eleven toppings, and Coca-Cola as the only soft drink option.
The first menu expansion occurred in 1989, with the debut of Domino’s deep dish. Its introduction followed market research showing that 40% of pizza customers preferred thick crusts. The new product launch cost approximately $25 million, of which $15 million was spent on new sheet metal pans with perforated bottoms.Domino’s started testing extra-large-size pizzas in early 1993, starting with the 30-slice, yard-long “The Dominator”.
Domino’s basic business strategy has been to offer a limited menu through carryout or delivery only. Until 1992 the company’s outlets offered just two products: Domino’s Traditional Hand Tossed Pizza and Coca-Cola. Beginning in 1992, however, Domino’s began to expand its menu options; during the next five years it added bread sticks, Ultimate Deep Dish Pizza, Crunchy Thin Crust Pizza, Buffalo Wings, Roma Herb Crust Pizza, Garlic Crunch Crust, and Pesto Crust Pizza.
